Light Eight Candles
by Lisa Baydush
© 2005

Chorus:
1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 candles!
1-2-3-4 5-6-7-8 (clap) candles!
On the first night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light one candle!
Then we’ll give thanks to God for bringing us to this day!
On the second night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light two candles!
Then we’ll give praise to God for the miracle of this holiday!
On the third night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light three candles!
Then spin the dreidel round: Nes, Gadol, Haya-a, Sham!
On the fourth night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light four candles!
Tell the story of the Maccabees, how Judah fought against tyranny!
On the fifth night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light five candles!
Celebrate with family this glorious piece of our history!
On the sixth night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light six candles!
Then watch the fire glow like the oil lamp so long ago!
On the seventh night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light seven candles!
Think of ways that you could be a modern-day Maccabee!
On the eighth night of Chanukah,
Take the shamas and light eight candles!
Open presents and make a plan to give tzedakah and lend a hand!
Teaching Tips:
Sing a capella… no instrument needed. Hold up fingers as you sing the
chorus, four on each hand.
Wiggle fingers for the word ‘candles.’ During the verses, children
shout out the number of candles.
With older children, use the lyrics cards and have small groups of students
lead each verse.
With preschoolers, sing this adapted verse with hand motions:
On the first night of first night of Chanukah, take the shamas and light one candle!
Tell the story of the Maccabees and celebrate with family!
(chorus)
With young children, the prop really enhances the song. Try my prop
(see menu above), or laminate paper flames and stick them with tape to a
picture of a menorah that you draw on a white board, or to a poster that
you’ve made.
